Luck

The man who said "I'd rather be lucky than good" saw deeply into life. People are afraid to face how great a part of life is dependent on luck. It's scary to think so much is out of one's control. There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net, and for a split second, it can either go forward or fall back. With a little luck, it goes forward, and you win. Or maybe it doesn't, and you lose.

Yesterday night, after a long long time (in terms of days), I planned to watch a movie just to get a break out of my boring routine. So I picked up the movie “Match Point” which was the resident of my computer since long and awaited its turn.

The above dialogue is with which the movie begins. The movie is centred on a former tennis star, Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), who falls in love with Nola Rice (Scarlett Johansson) who is his friend’s fiancée. Later on that friend becomes his brother-in-law but the lust for that lady makes him enter into an extra marital affair eventually making Nola pregnant. He plans the murder of Nola, projected as a burglary, to end the story. Generally, in movies, it is seen that the one who does the evil eventually gets punished. However, Match Point is different. Luck favours Chris and he escapes the murder and lives happily forever with his wife and family.

The point here I ponder is that how many times in life we would have said (or even thought), “Gosh, had this not happened I wouldn’t have made it”. The fact is that in life most of things happen with sheer luck. As told by Chris, people are scared to admit this. When I look back to my life, in lot many things luck has played a major role. Hardwork is mandatory but if something goes wrong; all the hardwork goes in vain. For example, you work really hard for your next job interview but while on the way you encounter a traffic jam and reach late and lose the opportunity. Who will you blame?? Your luck?? Yes, exactly. You break a traffic signal but exactly at the same time another guy breaks the traffic signal too. Police cop can catch only one of the two. If you’re lucky you’d escape. If you’re not, you’ll get caught.

We have been so obsessed with hardwork and when someone doesn’t succeed we quickly assume that the person didn’t work hard (same holds for our perception when a person succeeds). But the fact is that there is a thing called LUCK that plays a major part in what we are today and what we gonna become tomorrow.
